Watch your cat leave the litter box next time. They don't carefully step onto the mat. They jump, and they land wherever there's room.

Most litter mats are barely wider than the box itself. That leaves a small strip in front, easy to clear in a single hop. So instead of landing on the mat, their paws hit your floor, still covered in litter.

Some cats even go out of their way to avoid the mat. Plenty of owners say their cats "Olympic-level leap" right over it.

Either way, the result is the same: the mat sits there clean while the litter goes everywhere else. If your cat can clear it, it can't catch anything.

Even when your cat does land on the mat, the litter doesn't fall off right away. It clings to their paws, in between their toes and in their fur, and drops off a few steps later.

A flat mat or rug gives it nothing to grab onto. One step across it isn't enough to shake the litter loose, so your cat carries it straight past and leaves a little trail across the floor.

That's why you find litter in the hallway, under the couch, and in your bed, even though the box is in the corner of another room.

To actually stop it, the mat has to pull litter off their paws as they walk, and then hold onto it.

Here's the one nobody talks about. Some mats catch a decent amount of litter, but then what?

Mats full of little holes trap the litter inside them. To empty them, you have to carry them outside and shake them, hold them over the trash, or scrub them. And no matter what you do, you can never get them fully clean. A lot of cat owners end up throwing them out.

Rugs and fabric mats are no better. Shake them out and the litter flies everywhere, often right back onto the floor you just cleaned.

So you're stuck: a mat that catches litter but is a pain to empty, or one that's easy to clean but doesn't catch anything. Until now.
